This month, Douglass students teamed up with local Girl Scout troops to celebrate the arrival of the Fall season while learning about the principles of flight.
“As a lifetime member of Girl Scouts, I find that my experience as a National Council Delegate and a member of the Board of Directors aligns perfectly with Douglass Residential College's goal of connecting girls with greater opportunities for community engagement,” said Olivia Ivy Altidor DRC’28, an economics major.
Guided by a local high school physics teacher, Skylar Guadagno, Douglass students joined the Girl Scouts in investigating what it takes to keep an aircraft in motion.
“Incorporating physics with kite-flying is such a fun way to get young students into STEM,” said Nadia Islam DRC’29. “As a STEM major, I think it is essential for girls of all ages to be exposed to the different aspects of STEM, especially in a fun way!”
After the demonstration, they decorated and flew their own kites on Archery field outside Voorhees Chapel.
Douglass students who are former and current members of Girl Scouts of America came out to help build a sense of community across generations.
“As a former Girl Scout myself I really appreciate and value this experience,” said former Girl Scout Lilliana Van de Zilver DRC'29, “Not only did it bring back the fond memories I have, but I love being a part of the programs that provide foundations for problem solving and creativity that these girls will bring with them into the future.”
The event connected current and future Douglass students in a meaningful afternoon of community engagement.
“Being a ‘big sister’ to younger girls in amazing programs like Girl Scouts is an experience I’ll never forget,” added Layla Perkins DRC’28. “As a Girls Inc. of Greater Philadelphia alumna, programs that uplift, support, and create a positive community for them to grow are very rewarding!”
